This exceptionally rare floor lamp, designed by hans bergström and produced by asea in sweden, is a refined example of mid-century scandinavian lighting design at its most elegant and sculptural. Likely created in the 1940s or early 1950s, the lamp reflects bergström’s unique ability to merge architectural clarity with subtle organicism, resulting in pieces that are at once modern, graceful, and deeply human in scale and detail. The lamp’s structure is defined by three slender brass rods that rise vertically from an elegantly contoured base and converge at the neck just below the shade. This tripod construction lends both visual lightness and structural integrity, allowing the lamp to stand with quiet poise. The base, shaped into a soft triangle with gently rounded corners, adds a subtle sense of asymmetry and movement, grounding the composition while avoiding any visual heaviness. This fusion of symmetry and soft form is a hallmark of bergström’s design language. The brass, now with a warm, natural patina, gives the lamp a golden hue that speaks to its vintage origin and adds a layer of tactile richness. The surface shows light wear consistent with age, which enhances the authenticity of the piece without detracting from its visual impact. The material choice and craftsmanship reflect the high standards of asea, a swedish firm better known for its industrial output but which also produced some of the most refined residential lighting designs in the country during the mid-20th century. Crowning the lamp is a newly added pleated white shade—a faithful interpretation of the original design ethos. The shade’s understated, vertical pleating complements the slender proportions of the frame while diffusing light evenly, casting a soft, ambient glow. The textural contrast between the brass and the fabric further enhances the lamp’s sculptural presence and warmth. Hans bergström (1910–1996), best known as the founder of ateljé lyktan in 1934, was one of sweden’s most influential lighting designers. His career spanned the transition from traditional lighting forms to modernist, function-driven aesthetics. Bergström’s early works, such as this floor lamp, demonstrate his sensitivity to material and proportion, as well as his belief that lighting should be both functional and emotive. Though he is most closely associated with ateljé lyktan, his designs for other swedish manufacturers such as asea remain rare and highly prized among collectors. Asea (allmänna svenska elektriska aktiebolaget), while primarily known as an electrical engineering firm, maintained a significant lighting division that collaborated with many of sweden’s leading designers. Their production quality was exceptional, and their pieces—especially those created in brass during the 1940s and 1950s—are now regarded as some of the finest examples of swedish modern lighting. This lamp is in excellent condition. The brass components are structurally intact and aesthetically rich, with minor surface wear that reflects its age. The new shade has been selected with attention to historical accuracy and materials, offering both authenticity and renewed function.
