A rare and enchanting early work by celebrated American Victorian painter Seymour Joseph Guy, signed and dated NY, 1858 — placing this canvas squarely in the formative years of Guy's New York career, shortly after his arrival in the United States.
The painting depicts an allegorical putto — a dark-haired, rosy-cheeked child rendered with extraordinary tenderness — seated among rolling clouds in a luminous evening sky. The child cradles a gilded lyre in the manner of Apollo, the ancient Greek god of music and poetry, gazing skyward as if lost in melody. A crescent moon casts its soft light over a distant atmospheric seascape, lending the composition a dreamy, Romantic quality deeply in keeping with the sensibility of mid-19th century American art.
Guy was one of the most admired genre painters of his era, a member of the National Academy of Design, the Artists' Fund Society, and a founder of the American Watercolor Society. His works are held in major American collections, and his intimate, emotionally resonant canvases consistently attract strong collector interest.
Presented in its original magnificent oval gilt frame, featuring a deeply carved scalloped outer border, high-relief berry and flower midband, and a fine inner relief trim — a period frame of exceptional quality that complements and elevates the canvas.
