Martin Freyer Op Art Relief Porcelain Vase for Rosenthal, Germany, circa 1965–1975
A striking sculptural porcelain vase designed by Martin Freyer for Rosenthal during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Characterised by its rhythmic relief decoration and bold asymmetrical form, the piece is a compelling example of Op Art translated into three-dimensional design.
Rather than relying on colour or applied ornament, Freyer transforms the porcelain surface itself into an optical experience. The precisely structured relief creates shifting patterns of light and shadow that continuously change with the viewing angle, giving the vase a remarkable sense of movement and visual depth.
Its low, elongated silhouette and sculptural proportions distinguish it from Freyer's better-known cylindrical forms, lending the piece a strong architectural presence despite its restrained monochrome palette. The result is an object that functions equally as a vessel and as an abstract sculpture.
