Martin Freyer Op Art Relief Porcelain Floor Vase for Rosenthal Studio-Line, Germany, circa 1965–1975
A striking large-scale porcelain floor vase designed by Hans Martin Freyer for Rosenthal Studio-Line during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Characterised by its sculptural relief and precise geometric rhythm, the vase is a compelling example of Op Art translated into three-dimensional form.
The tall rectangular body is entirely covered with an intricate relief pattern that changes continuously as light moves across the surface. Rather than relying on colour, Freyer created optical movement through repetition, shadow, and subtle variations in depth. The result is a vase that appears almost kinetic, its surface seemingly shifting and vibrating depending on the viewing angle.
Executed in crisp white porcelain, the piece perfectly illustrates Rosenthal Studio-Line's ambition to transform porcelain into a medium for contemporary artistic expression. At 43 cm in height, the vase possesses a strong sculptural presence and functions equally well as a vessel or as a standalone decorative object.
