Wolf-Diether Pölloth Studio Stoneware Vase, Germany, circa 1980s–1990s
A striking hand-thrown studio vase by German ceramic artist Wolf-Diether Pölloth (1937–1999), distinguished by its atmospheric painterly glaze decoration and refined sculptural form.
The vase presents a gently swelling bottle silhouette with harmonious proportions, elevated by a remarkable surface composition in deep black, smoky grey, and warm rose-pink tones. The layered glazes flow across the vessel in broad, expressive gestures, creating an effect reminiscent of geological strata, distant horizons, or abstract landscape painting.
Executed in reddish-brown stoneware and finished with a glossy glaze, the piece beautifully demonstrates Pölloth's ability to combine disciplined form with richly nuanced surfaces. Variations in glaze density create subtle transitions between matte and reflective passages, giving the vase exceptional depth and visual complexity.
Wolf-Diether Pölloth belonged to the important tradition of German studio ceramics that flourished in the second half of the twentieth century. His works are particularly admired for their painterly approach to ceramic surfaces, bridging the worlds of functional pottery and contemporary abstract art.
Even without flowers, this vase possesses a strong sculptural presence and functions equally well as an autonomous ceramic object.

Wolf-Diether Pölloth was among the notable figures of the Upper Franconian studio ceramics movement. His work is recognised for its sophisticated glaze chemistry and expressive, painterly surfaces, which distinguish his ceramics from the more restrained stoneware traditions of post-war Germany.
A refined and highly decorative example of German Studiokeramik, ideal for collectors of post-war ceramics, organic modern interiors, and twentieth-century vessel sculpture.
