Anton piesche & reif sgraffito floor vase, model 51b/40, east germany, 1960s
a striking large-scale ceramic floor vase produced by anton piesche & reif in east germany during the 1960s. Decorated using the traditional sgraffito technique, this impressive vessel combines bold geometric ornamentation with a strong architectural form, making it a standout example of mid-century gdr ceramic design.
the elongated ovoid body is structured through alternating vertical panels of hand-incised decoration. Diagonal bands, rhythmic dotted textures, and deeply carved linear motifs create a dynamic contrast between the glossy dark-brown glaze and the exposed sandy clay body beneath. The interplay of matte and reflective surfaces gives the vase exceptional depth and visual interest from every angle.
standing 40 cm high, the vase possesses a sculptural presence that allows it to function equally well as a decorative floor piece, a statement vessel, or a collectible example of postwar european ceramics.
during the 1950s and 1960s, east german ceramic workshops developed a distinctive visual language that merged traditional craftsmanship with modernist design principles. Anton piesche & reif became particularly known for richly textured surfaces and hand-worked decorative techniques such as sgraffito, which remain highly sought after by collectors today.
