This exceptional Royal Vienna cabinet plate presents the celebrated scene of Rinaldo and Armida from Torquato Tasso’s epic poem Gerusalemme Liberata (Jerusalem Delivered), one of the most enduring literary themes of the nineteenth century. The finely executed composition depicts the enchanted lovers within a tranquil woodland setting, while additional figures emerge discreetly from the background, lending narrative depth and theatrical character to the scene.
The central painting is executed with remarkable refinement and bears the signature F. Ott. Delicate modelling of the faces, flowing classical drapery and the atmospheric landscape demonstrate the high standard of hand-painted decoration for which Royal Vienna became renowned during the late nineteenth century. The reverse retains the titled inscription Rinaldo und Armida, further identifying the subject represented.
Surrounding the painting is an exceptionally rich cobalt blue and gilt border of unusual quality. Deep cobalt reserves contain finely rendered animal motifs including hares, squirrels, herons and a cockerel, all framed by elaborate raised gilt ornamentation. The combination of luminous gilding, brilliant cobalt enamel and narrative painting creates a striking display piece intended for the cabinet rather than the dining table.
Marked to the reverse with the characteristic blue underglaze beehive mark and impressed factory number 400, this plate represents a highly decorative and collectible example of late nineteenth-century Royal Vienna porcelain, combining literary subject matter, masterful hand-painting and outstanding ornamental design.
