An elegant pair of French Vieux Paris perfume bottles attributed to Jacob Petit, dating to c.1835–1845. Executed in hard-paste porcelain, they represent the luxurious decorative wares produced for fashionable French interiors during the Louis Philippe period.
The bottles feature a rich Bleu de Roi cobalt ground with gilded decoration and finely painted scenes after David Teniers the Younger, the renowned Flemish painter whose compositions were widely copied by nineteenth-century French porcelain artists. The quality and preservation of the miniature painting are particularly noteworthy.
Characteristic features include the greyish-milk tone of the porcelain, kiln specks associated with wood-fired production and original contraction lines visible on the bases. Both bottles retain their original porcelain stoppers decorated with gilded rosettes. Pieces from this series were deliberately left unsigned to satisfy the requirements of elite Parisian retailers such as Maison Lahoche. A desirable surviving pair from the golden age of Vieux Paris porcelain.
