Known in France as a lavoir, this monolithic limestone trough would have been used as early as circa 1800 to wash clothes before the advent of washing machines. This particular lavoir is quite interesting, as it has sloped ends beneath scrubbing platforms on both sides. Usually, there is only one slanted side for scrubbing, with the reservoir holding the water and cleaning agents. In today’s homes, this would make a wonderful planter box or a basin for a fountain, in particular with a vertical jet.
