Three columns of ivory Tekke guls march down the deep crimson field
of this hand-knotted Afghan Turkmen rug — twenty-four octagonal
medallions in total, each one precisely formed with a dark navy
center rosette and ivory surround, connected across the field by
the characteristic windowpane grid of the Bokhara tradition.
The Tekke gul is the oldest and most recognized motif in Central
Asian tribal weaving — a tribal crest that identifies the Tekke
Turkmen and has been reproduced continuously for centuries. In
this piece, each gul is cleanly drawn with strong ivory-to-red
contrast and navy secondary details. The multi-layered geometric
border — narrow bands of hourglass and diamond repeats — frames
the field with a tight, composed finish.

What sets this piece apart is its clarity and balance. The Bokhara
is the most universally recognized Afghan rug pattern in the world
— and that recognition works in its favor. A buyer who does not
know Khamyab from Khal Mohammadi will know a Bokhara. It is the
rug that reads immediately as authentic tribal craft: bold
repetition, deep red, precise geometry. It anchors a living room,
works under a dining table, and holds its own in a study or library.
The scale — just over nine feet by six and a half feet — makes it
practical for a wide range of spaces.
The Tekke tribe of Central Asian Turkmen origin wove the original
gul that defines this pattern. Afghan Turkmen weavers have
continued the tradition for generations, using the asymmetrical
double-knot technique that produces a short, dense, highly durable
pile. The grey-toned fringe on this piece is characteristic of
wool-on-wool construction and adds to its authenticity.
This rug comes from a family with four decades of direct sourcing
in the weaving villages of northern Afghanistan. My grandfather
built this business from nothing in Islamabad in the 1980s.
Every piece I sell is chosen with knowledge of its origin
and its making.
Care: Rotate periodically for even wear. Vacuum on low suction
without beater bar. Professional cleaning every few years.
A rug pad is recommended.
