The ivory star lattice of this hand-knotted Afghan Turkmen rug reads
like a constellation against a deep navy ground. Interlocking
six-pointed stars in warm cream and ivory float across the field in
a precise, repeating pattern, each star filled with smaller geometric
and botanical motifs in crimson, forest green, and navy. The design
is known as Aina Khana — mirror house — for the way the stars appear
to reflect light and expand the visual space of the room. The wide
ivory border adds a second layer of the pattern vocabulary: a richly
drawn repeat of boteh paisley forms, pomegranate trees, and star
rosettes in navy, crimson, and sage green on a warm cream ground.
The border alone is exceptional. Together, the composition is one
of the most refined expressions of Afghan Turkmen geometric weaving.

What sets this piece apart is the ivory ground — the rarest and
most commercially desirable color in Afghan tribal weaving. Red
and navy Afghan rugs are widely available. A piece where ivory
dominates at nearly ten feet by six feet eight inches is a genuine
find. It sits naturally in contemporary, Scandinavian, bohemian,
and traditional interiors alike. Laid on dark hardwood it
brightens the floor. Against white walls it holds its own as the
room's primary textile element. Interior designers working in
lighter, layered interiors reach for exactly this — authentic
hand-knotted craft in a palette that doesn't compete.
The Aina Khana pattern is woven by Turkmen artisans in the northern
Afghan provinces of Jowzjan and Faryab, where the star lattice
tradition has been passed through weaving families for generations.
Each star is tied knot by knot over months of work — the precision
of alignment across the full field is a mark of the weaver's skill.
This rug comes from a family with four decades of direct sourcing
in the weaving villages of northern Afghanistan. My grandfather
built this business from nothing in Islamabad in the 1980s.
Every piece I sell reflects that history.
Care: Rotate periodically for even wear. Vacuum on low suction
without beater bar. Professional cleaning every few years.
A quality rug pad is strongly recommended.
