Enigmatic, captivating, brutish, magnanimous are few of the words that popped in our head when we first viewed this painting. … Read more Enigmatic, captivating, brutish, magnanimous are few of the words that popped in our head when we first viewed this painting. And not too many seconds later did we decide we must have it. It is a signed original watercolor painting from 1949 by an unknown artist whose signature says "Benke". 1949 would have been the height of when Picasso was known worldwide, and we see much influence of his work here; but not so much the cubist portion of his work only but also the earlier periods. We definitely see the painting of Gertrude Stein by Picasso here, with her droopy abstraction of the eyes. We also love the large nose, the exuberant lipstick, and the hair that is contrasted in itself with the short bangs and thick waves on the bottom. To top it all off, and a portion you might miss at first, is that sweater she's wearing. That portion of the painting is so rich and helps carry the rest of it. It's truly beautiful. To finish it all off is the gorgeous frame it's in. Though we're not sure if that's what the artist chose or was married to it later, with the non-reflective glass.
