This hand-knotted Afghan Aqcha rug stops a room immediately. The
deep burgundy field is organized in a bold star lattice — large
eight-pointed stars in brilliant golden yellow and ivory,
interlocking across the entire field with crimson diamond accents
and small navy botanical fills between them. The wide border carries
the same golden yellow ground with a repeating tulip and pomegranate
motif in burgundy and navy. The palette is extraordinary: gold and
burgundy is rare in Afghan weaving, where the vast majority of Aqcha
rugs are woven on red or dark grounds. This golden-field version
was produced only on special commission, which is exactly why
designers stop when they see it.

What sets this piece apart is its color. Aqcha rugs are among the
most robust and durably knotted Afghan tribal rugs — the low pile
and tight knot structure give them exceptional longevity in high
traffic areas. The star lattice design, strongly influenced by
Turkmen Tekke weaving traditions, has been produced in Aqcha
and the surrounding Jowzjan province for generations. In the
standard red and black colorway it is a classic. In gold and
burgundy it becomes something else entirely — a piece that works
against dark walls, pale linen furniture, and contemporary interiors
with equal ease.
This rug comes from a family with four decades of direct sourcing
in the weaving villages of northern Afghanistan. My grandfather
traded these rugs on the streets of Islamabad in the 1980s,
building a business from nothing. Every piece I sell is chosen
with firsthand knowledge of where it was made.
Care: Rotate periodically for even wear. Vacuum on low suction
without beater bar. Professional cleaning every few years.
A rug pad is recommended.
