The field of this hand-knotted Afghan Turkmen rug is nearly black —
a very deep midnight navy — filled wall to wall with hundreds of
precisely repeated miniature gul motifs in crimson, ivory, and forest
green. This is the Khamyab design: one of the most finely knotted
and labor-intensive patterns in Afghan rug weaving, where the density
of the repeat and the tightness of the knot count determine everything.
In low light it reads as a rich, dark ground. In natural light, the
miniature pattern reveals itself in extraordinary detail. It is the
kind of rug that rewards close attention.
What sets this piece apart is the restraint of its palette and the
precision of its execution. The layered border — a floral vine in
ivory and green, framed by narrow crimson and navy bands — gives
the composition a formal, almost architectural finish. At just over
ten feet by six feet six inches, it fills a room without dominating
it. It works equally in a formal dining room, a study lined with
dark wood, a primary bedroom, or layered beneath a lighter neutral
rug in a contemporary interior.

The Khamyab is among the most demanding patterns in the Afghan
weaving tradition. The allover repeat leaves no room for error —
every motif must align with the same precision across the full
length and width of the rug. It is woven by Turkmen artisans in
the northern provinces of Afghanistan who have carried this
pattern lineage through generations.
This rug comes from a family with four decades of direct sourcing
experience in these weaving villages. My grandfather began trading
Afghan Turkmen rugs on the streets of Islamabad in the 1980s —
a refugee who built a business from nothing, sleeping beside his
inventory and storing rugs at the local mosque. My father carried
that forward. Every piece I sell is chosen with firsthand knowledge
of where it came from and what it took to make it.
Care: Rotate periodically for even wear. Vacuum on low suction
without beater bar. Professional cleaning every few years.
A quality rug pad is recommended.
