A richly saturated crimson field is covered in precise, repeating
gul medallions — the hallmark motif of the Khal Mohammadi tradition —
hand-knotted by Turkmen weavers in the Kunduz and Andkhoy region of
northern Afghanistan. The repeating columns of octagonal elephant-foot
motifs are rendered in midnight navy and ivory against a deep madder-red
ground, framed by a multi-layered geometric border in indigo and cream.
This is a hand-knotted tribal rug of the kind that interior designers
reach for when they need an authentic Afghan wool carpet that anchors
a room without requiring a period interior to match it.
At ten feet by six feet six inches, this is a generous, room-commanding
size. The large area rug works beautifully beneath a dining table,
centered in a formal living room, layered in a study or library,
or used as a statement piece in an entryway or bedroom. The deep
red and navy palette pairs equally well with dark wood furniture,
leather seating, linen sofas, and contemporary interiors seeking
warmth and texture.
The Khal Mohammadi tradition takes its name from master dyer and weaver
Khal Mohammad, an Ersari Turkmen from northern Afghanistan who developed
the signature layered madder-red dye process that defines this entire
rug lineage. Applied in stages to hand-spun wool and dried in the sun
between dyeing sessions, the red achieves a depth that shifts
subtly in different light and deepens further with age. The Afghan
double-knot construction produces a dense, firm pile with a knot
density between 100 and 200 knots per square inch — exceptionally
durable and pattern-retaining for decades of use.
This piece comes from a family with four decades of direct sourcing
experience in the weaving villages of northern Afghanistan. The
tradition began with my grandfather, who traded Afghan Turkmen rugs
in Islamabad in the 1980s. My father continued that work, and I have
spent my entire life surrounded by these textiles. Every rug we
offer is selected with firsthand knowledge of its pattern lineage,
tribal origin, and craftsmanship quality. The rug has been
professionally hand-washed and is ready to install.
