A beautiful matched pair of antique Japanese Satsuma vases depicting the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin), beloved figures of Japanese folklore associated with prosperity, happiness, longevity, wisdom, and good fortune.
Hand-painted in fine detail, the companion vases feature richly decorated figural scenes with members of the Seven Lucky Gods gathered within traditional landscapes accented by bamboo, cranes, waterfalls, and auspicious symbols. The figures are rendered in vibrant enamels with extensive gilt decoration, intricate patterned robes, and expressive facial details.
Both vases display the characteristic crackled ivory glaze associated with quality Satsuma ware and are enhanced by lavish gold decoration at the shoulder and foot. The undersides bear matching Kōzan (光山) marks, indicating production by the same workshop and confirming their intended presentation as a companion pair.
The Seven Lucky Gods have long been cherished in Japanese culture as symbols of fortune, abundance, longevity, learning, protection, and happiness. Together, these vases create a harmonious decorative ensemble that celebrates these enduring themes while showcasing the artistry of traditional Japanese ceramics.
Acquired together and retained as a matched pair from the same collection, the vases remain together today as originally intended.
