Gray 1881, depicting the same … Read more A charming and cohesive pair of small Victorian oil paintings, one signed and dated W. Gray 1881, depicting the same celadon-ground porcelain vase — painted with kingfisher birds and flowering branches in the Japonisme manner — holding different floral arrangements: vivid red geraniums on the left panel, soft pink carnations (dianthus) on the right. Both compositions are set on a warm walnut ledge, the left against a lace curtain, the right against a dark interior ground, creating pleasing contrast as companion pieces.
Both paintings are housed in their original period burled walnut veneer frames with gilt liner inserts, in good condition consistent with age. William Gray is a listed British artist documented as active 1835–1883, with works appearing at regional British auction houses.
