An exceptional and complete graduated set of seven antique French pewter measuring flagons (mesures de capacité), dating from the 19th century. Historically utilized in French taverns, markets, and shops for the precise measurement of liquids like wine, cider, and spirits, this uniform collection scales down beautifully from a substantial largest vessel to a charming, diminutive smallest piece.
Each flagon features a classic cylindrical body with a flared base, an angular geometric handle, and a distinctively shaped hinged lid operated by a sturdy thumbpiece. The fronts and lids bear faint historic capacity markings and verification stamps, including visible incisions like "DEMI LITRE" and "LITRE," which underscores their authentic utilitarian heritage. Boasting a rich, unpolished slate-gray patina with subtle variations in tone, this collection offers a striking structural profile. It is perfect as a sophisticated statement piece for a rustic kitchen, an antique sideboard, or a curated traditional dining room display.
The entire set comprises seven graduated vessels, with the largest flagon measuring ten and a half inches high, five and a half inches wide, and seven and a half inches deep. Moving down the collection, the second largest measures eight inches high by four and a half inches wide by six and a half inches deep, followed by the third at seven inches high by four inches wide by five and a half inches deep. The middle flagon stands five inches high by three inches wide by four inches deep, while the fifth measures four inches high by two and a half inches wide by three and a half inches deep. The final two miniature pieces complete the sequence, with the sixth measuring three and a half inches high by two inches wide by two and a half inches deep, and the smallest vessel concluding the set at two and a half inches high by one and a half inches wide by two point three inches deep.
