The composition reflects Renaissance ideals, with a calm, harmonious arrangement, softly modelled facial features, and elegantly flowing drapery. The Virgin tenderly supports the Christ Child while maintaining the restrained dignity characteristic of Italian devotional sculpture of the period. The sculpture retains a significant portion of its historic polychromy, now displaying an attractive natural patina and centuries of devotional wear that enhance its authenticity and character. The silver halo and crown are later additions. The rear is characteristically hollowed, consistent with period devotional carvings. A highly decorative and evocative Renaissance devotional sculpture, equally suitable for a private collection or an interior where genuine period works are appreciated. Dimensions: 51 cm high × 18 cm wide × 12 cm deep. Presents age-related wear, losses to the original polychromy, minor surface abrasions and natural ageing consistent with its considerable antiquity.
