The Artist and his Inspirations

Maurice Le Scouëzec (1881–1940) was a French painter, sailor, and global adventurer. A prominent figure of the interwar École de Paris, he frequented the artistic circles of Montparnasse alongside icons like Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso.

His fiercely independent spirit led him away from Paris art dealers, prompting extensive travels throughout Africa and Madagascar, before he ultimately settled back in Brittany.

The featured artwork, Autoportrait en tirailleur algérien (1918), is a compelling expressionist self-portrait.
