This oil painting is a striking mid-to-late 20th-century homage to Claude Monet’s The Water Lily Pond (1899).

It was painted by the celebrated French post-impressionist artist and sculptor Michel Roy, who worked under the pseudonym Michel Saint-Alban (1913–2015).

While Monet pioneered the Impressionist movement by capturing the fleeting nature of light and reflection at his beloved Giverny home, Saint-Alban spent a later portion of his long career explicitly reinterpreting these historic landscapes. He dedicated an entire exhibition series to the site, famously titled "Saint Alban et Giverny.

In this artwork, Saint-Alban faithfully recreates the iconic composition of Monet's green Japanese footbridge arching gracefully over a tranquil pond blanketed with floating water lilies.

However, Saint-Alban infuses the scene with his own signature mid-century aesthetic, utilising a rich palette dominated by autumnal yellows and golds alongside textured brushstrokes.

The painting is definitively marked by Saint-Alban’s distinct cursive signature in the bottom-right corner.
