An elegant pair of French bedside tables (chevets) from the Louis-Philippe period, each with three paneled drawers and characteristic cabriole legs. The two pieces exhibit the calm, linearly proportioned design language of the early 19th century, with subtle molding and harmonious proportions.
Historical Context: The chevet, or French bedside table, emerged as a distinct type of furniture during the 18th century to hold small items, candles, or medicines close to the bed. During the Louis-Philippe period (1830–1848) and beyond, such small pieces of furniture were crafted with a simplified, functional design—less ornamental than the Louis XVI or Empire styles, but with proven construction principles: straight or slightly curved legs, framed drawer fronts, and understated knobs. Bedside tables were made in pairs and were a standard feature of well-appointed bedrooms.
Design: Louis-Philippe style. The furniture displays a clear, linear composition: curved legs, a subtly articulated side profile with a wave-shaped cutout at the bottom, and a raised gallery edge at the top for securing items. The drawer fronts are defined by wide profile frames; the knobs are made of wood or metal. The overall impression is understated, balanced, and functional, without ostentation. Originally placed at the head of beds as bedside tables to keep items within easy reach, these two pieces now serve as compact side tables, storage tables, or decorative tables in bedrooms, hallways, or smaller rooms.
Height: approx. 70–73 cm; Width: 36 cm; Depth: 31 cm. Material and condition: Wood, with variations in color between each piece (typical for antique pairs). Very good condition, with visible signs of age and patina; stable and fully functional.
