Oil on canvas realized by Irolli in 1922 ca. Hand signed "V. Irolli" lower right. On the original stretcher, in the old nailing. In impeccable and fresh condition and with a beautiful coeval richly carved gilded frame. Vincenzo Irolli captures with extraordinary vigor the bustling atmosphere of the fish market. Al Mercato del Pesce epitomizes Irolli’s mastery of color, texture, and light, qualities that earned him the title of the “last great interpreter of Neapolitan realism.” In this large-scale composition, a young woman engages with a fishmonger, her figure bathed in dramatic chiaroscuro, while the vibrant array of seafood — gleaming fish, lobsters, and octopus — is rendered with almost tactile immediacy. The vigorous brushwork, thick impasto, and chromatic richness reflect Irolli’s ability to blend verismo with painterly lyricism, turning a humble market scene into a tableau of striking vitality. Exuding both immediacy and atmosphere, the painting encapsulates Irolli’s lifelong fascination with everyday Neapolitan life, portrayed with empathy and sensual energy. Works of this scale and subject are rare within his oeuvre, making this canvas a significant example of his mature production. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
