Issued a decade before the creation of West Virginia, the map depicts the Commonwealth in its original, undivided form and offers a fascinating snapshot of transportation and development in the mid-19th century.

Particularly noteworthy is the detailed inset profile of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal across the upper portion of the map, illustrating elevations and distances along one of America's most ambitious early transportation projects. The map also includes extensive tables of distances, canals, roads, and steamboat routes, documenting key commercial connections between Richmond, Norfolk, Washington, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and other important destinations.
