Stunning monumental one-of-a-kind coastal assemblage vessel with extraordinary nature made texture and unusual Peace River, Florida, provenance.
According to the local fisherman from whom it was acquired, the vessel was intentionally placed in the Peace River for approximately two years and remained there through several hurricanes before being recovered. During that time, the exterior and interior developed a dense natural accumulation of barnacles, oyster shells, mollusk remains, shell fragments, mineral deposits, and other aquatic encrustation.
After recovery, the vessel was carefully cleaned, stabilized, and preserved while retaining its rugged river-grown surface. A large natural iridescent mollusk shell was later artistically positioned at the opening by Florida Gulf Pearl. A single 10 mm vintage Japanese faux black pearl was then placed within the shell as a restrained signature accent, creating the appearance of a hidden treasure without overpowering the original encrustation.
Its broad shoulders, flared rim, and heavily weathered aquatic surface recall the sculptural character of traditional Japanese takotsubo, or octopus-fishing vessels. This is a stylistic comparison only; no claim of Japanese origin, age, or historical fishing use is made.
The underlying vessel is nonmagnetic and does not appear to be porcelain. Its exact material has not been professionally identified.
Measurements
* Height: approximately 19 inches
* Rim diameter: approximately 11 inches
* Widest width: approximately 14 inches
* Base diameter: approximately 6 inches
Condition: Carefully cleaned, stabilized, and well preserved. Natural weathering, discoloration, exposed original surface, shell fragments, mineral deposits, irregular textures, and minor losses are intrinsic to its prolonged underwater history.
The iridescent mollusk shell and single faux Japanese vintage black pearl are later artistic additions by Florida Gulf Pearl. The barnacles and natural shells remain delicate, and minor shedding may occur during handling.
