The Painter and His Masterpiece
This classic exhibition poster spotlights the prominent Spanish Cubist painter Juan Gris (1887–1927). Born in Madrid, Gris later moved to Paris, where he worked closely alongside Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. He became celebrated for his highly disciplined, geometric precision and structured approach to Synthetic Cubism.
The featured artwork on the poster is Le Papier à Musique (The Sheet of Music), painted by Gris between late 1913 and early 1914. This striking avant-garde still life masterfully integrates architectural wood-grain patterns, a glass chalice, and fragmented musical notations. It captures the Cubist ethos of deconstructing everyday objects and reassembling them across flattened, interlocking planes.
The Exhibition and the Museum
The poster was produced for a retrospective exhibition titled "Apollinaire et les Peintres". It paid homage to Guillaume Apollinaire, the influential poet and art critic who famously championed early 20th-century modernism and coined terms associated with the Cubist movement.
The event took place at the Grand Palais in Paris as part of the historic Salon d'Automne, in 1980. Established in 1903 as an alternative to the conservative official salons, the Salon d'Automne served as the launching pad for monumental movements like Fauvism and Cubism.
Today, the original painting of Le Papier à musique is housed within the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou (Musée National d'Art Moderne) in Paris. This piece has an attribution mark,
