The Artist
Born in Geneva, Swiss-Russian artist Serge Diakonoff (b. 1933) is widely recognized as a major innovator in contemporary fantastic-visionary painting. Heavily inspired by surrealism and a personal collection of tribal African masks, Diakonoff gained prominence during the 1970s and 1980s as a pioneer of body art. His work eschews conventional physical likeness to instead craft psychological or "mental portraits," map out inner human conflicts, and explore subconscious transformation.
The Artwork & Symbolism
The artwork featured on this poster, created for his notable 1982 exhibition "A Fleur de Peau" (Skin Deep), serves as a prime example of his signature chimerical style. It depicts a sphinx-like creature with a human female visage emerging from a stylised, feathered and animalistic torso.
The piece relies heavily on specific surrealist motifs. The Fractured, Stone-like Face symbolises the delicate, fragile boundaries of human identity and the physical skin. The Horns and Feathers evoke ancient mythological mutations, bridging the primal subconscious with conscious reality. Spiky, Barren Background Structures h ighlight a sense of profound isolation and psychological depth.
Through these layered components, Diakonoff masterfully balances the organic and the inorganic, capturing a powerful visual representation of human vulnerability and internal fragmentation. This piece has an attribution mark,
