a polychrome, vitrified hard porcelain sculpture depicting napoleon bonaparte, created by the renowned ceramist silvio righetto for the cacciapuoti factory. The work is hand-signed by the artist on the base with a metal nib, directly into the ceramic body ("s. Righetto"), and bears the factory mark ("cacciapuoti") under the base. Additionally, on the upper edge of the back of the base, the inscription "l'empereur" ("the emperor") is inscribed in red. This inscription refers to may 18, 1804, the date on which the french senate approved the decree proclaiming napoleon bonaparte emperor of the french. The object offered for sale dates back to the mid-20th century, specifically between 1940 and 1960.
useful information for evaluating the item:
from our online research, we know that the cacciapuoti factory boasts numerous auction results, and the four highest results we found range from €3,750 to €19,000, plus 25-30% buyer's premium, for a large group of 180 cm tall angelfish with red enamel, resting on a large wooden base, created by guido cacciapuoti, the factory's founder and leading figure. Silvio righetto was a renowned sculptor and ceramic decorator who actively collaborated with the cacciapuoti factory. In our online searches, we identified several sculptures created by righetto for cacciapuoti, offered on various art and antiques websites for prices ranging from €300-500 to €800-1,000. We did not find any soldiers created by the artist, which attests to their extreme rarity. It should also be noted that porcelain soldiers in general are highly sought-after on the art market; for this reason, they were created by various italian and european manufacturers. In particular, notable historical figures, such as napoleon, possess a significantly higher collector's value than ordinary soldiers or more common sculptures.
final considerations on the object:
napoleon bonaparte (1769-1821) was a general and statesman who profoundly influenced european history between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Having risen to power in france in 1799, he was crowned emperor of the french (empereur des français) on december 2, 1804. He conquered much of the continent, spreading the ideals of the revolution and leaving an indelible historical, military, and legal legacy.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
silvio righetto (active from the early twentieth century to the 1960s) was an italian sculptor and master ceramist, best known for his role as director of the "g. De fabris" school of ceramic art in nove di bassano (vicenza) and for his collaborations with the renowned cacciapuoti factory. He led the nove school for twenty years, establishing himself as the guardian of local tradition. Under his direction, the institute maintained the historic neo-rosetto style, resisting the avant-garde movements of the time and making the school a stronghold of classicism. He was also responsible for historic paintings, such as the curtain for the local parish theater. Having moved to milan around 1940, he collaborated assiduously with the renowned cacciapuoti factory. Here he distinguished himself by creating porcelain and majolica sculptures and figurines characterized by brilliant colors and meticulous detail, ranging from zoomorphic and oriental subjects (such as maltese dogs and elephants) to historical and shakespearean characters (such as hamlet). Today, his figurines and sculptures are sought after by collectors and regularly sell at major auction houses, such as cambi, and on antiques platforms. This piece has an attribution mark,
