This pair of striking “Bubble” wall sconces, designed by Helena Tynell, is one of the most recognizable examples of lighting inspired by the art glass of the 1960s and 1970s. The design was created for the German manufacturer Glashütte Limburg, with whom the Finnish designer collaborated later in her career.
The shades are made of thick, molded glass with a distinctive air-bubble texture, from which the series takes its name. The convex, organic forms resemble a cluster of glass bubbles or droplets frozen in glass. The irregularly textured surface beautifully refracts light, creating a rich interplay of reflections and subtle shadows on the wall.
The delicate, slightly amber hue of the glass lends the lighting an exceptionally warm character. Even when turned off, the wall sconces function as small glass sculptures, showcasing the craftsmanship and Tynell’s characteristic fascination with organic forms. When the light is turned on, the glass’s structure takes on depth, and each bubble becomes part of a decorative light show.
The design of these wall sconces perfectly combines Mid-Century Modern aesthetics, a Scandinavian sensibility for light, and an experimental approach to glass—for which Helena Tynell was particularly renowned. Today, the models from the “Bubble” series are among the designer’s most sought-after creations and are considered classics of European design from the second half of the 20th century.
As a set, the wall sconces create an elegant, symmetrical composition that works perfectly in modernist and vintage interiors, as well as in contemporary settings seeking a unique, collectible accent. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
