c. 1900s-1920s; Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) - Chicago, IL
Monumental oak fraternal lodge bench executed in a highly theatrical Renaissance Revival taste, constructed as a triple-seat ceremonial or reception bench with deeply tufted black leather upholstery and elaborate carved ornament throughout. The composition centers around a towering high-back throne form flanked by two lower armchairs, unified beneath an architectural crest carved with the initials "BPOE" and surmounted by a carved elk head trophy with mounted antlers. Massive molded crown elements, carved Ionic scrolls, beaded trim, shell carvings, foliate brackets, and paneled tiger oak surfaces contribute to the bench's imposing lodge-room presentation. The dramatic central backrest retains deeply button-tufted leather upholstery framed by carved scrollwork, while the side seats mirror the central form with matching tufted backs and broad plank arms.
Pieces of this scale were typically commissioned for Elk lodges, ceremonial halls, initiation rooms, or officer platforms, serving both functional and symbolic roles within the organization. The substantial oak construction, oversized proportions, and heraldic elk imagery reflect the theatrical architectural language commonly employed by American fraternal organizations during the early twentieth century.
