It lives in the weight of a cloth. In the way a woven pattern catches the light — not printed, not applied, but made, thread by thread, into the fabric itself. This set of four antique French damask linen napkins is that kind of luxury. The kind that was commissioned for a trousseau, kept in a linen press, and passed along by someone who understood exactly what she had.
The damask is a full-ground design — irises and sweeping florals woven into the field, the whole composition appearing as a shimmer of white against white, light against shadow, visible only when the cloth moves. At 23 inches square these are proper dinner napkins — generous enough to have anchored a formal place setting, and beautiful enough to use again today.
At the center of each, a two-letter cipher monogram — VT, worked in white-on-white embroidery, bold and well-executed. Not initialed. Composed.
Three are in excellent vintage condition. One carries an old repair — neatly done, the kind that speaks to how well these were cared for rather than how they were neglected.
