Hand-crafted in the 1960s – 1980s, this monumental ceremonial piece is a magnificent showcase of the traditional Baganda Ngoma dance art. The drum features a beautifully proportioned, flat-bottomed conical wood shell measuring a dramatic 14.5 inches in total length. It gracefully tapers from an expansive 11-inch-diameter percussive playing head down to a stable, solid 6-inch-diameter base. This robust architectural form functions as a dynamic canvas for a rare dual-hide wrapping system. The lower body is enveloped in a thick, premium hair-on cowhide sleeve exhibiting beautiful, saturated cognac-brown and off-white spotting. This native fur wrap acts as an acoustic absorber, removing high-frequency metallic overtones meant to produce a warm, bass-heavy resonance that carries long distances. The upper portion is masterfully detailed with an incredibly dense, parallel network of tightly hand-twisted vertical hide cords. This classic East African yoke tension system binds the upper and lower hides together; as the natural materials dry and shrink over decades, they perfectly tension the drum head entirely free of metal hardware. Symbolizing warmth, fertility, and life in Buganda tradition, large Embuutu "female drums" historically held immense royal significance as communication tools and central instruments in the sacred dance. Complete with an integrated hand-twisted leather carrying strap, this structurally substantial artifact seamlessly bridges historic tribal craftsmanship with the raw, earthy elements of the Organic Modern and Global Eclectic design aesthetics. The underlying wood frame is structurally sound and rock-solid, and it sits completely flat and flush. The original, genuine dual-hide casing and natural hand-twisted vertical tension cordage remain completely intact, showing beautiful organic variations and an authentic, warm age patina with zero loose weaves, structural tearing, or modern repairs. The fur retains excellent density and serves as a beautiful example of mid- to late-20th-century East African ethnographic craft. less
