Born in 1964 and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He hails from a prominent family of ancestral artists and educators, and is a graduate of the prestigious Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Two Bulls created this significant piece during the mid-2000s (c 2014). This era marked a highly creative period where the artist actively experimented with expanding his graphic painting styles onto three-dimensional surfaces. Rather than throwing clay from scratch, he famously sourced heavy, eight-inch porcelain and thick glass blanks to function as a dynamic canvas for complex, multi-layered paint applications. Striking a perfect balance between traditional Plains tribal influences and mid-20th-century eclectic design, this unique statement piece is signed "Sam 2 Bulls" boldly along the lower front edge. His exceptional regional masterworks are widely collected and regularly featured at major heritage landmarks, and through the Dakota Indian Foundation. The baluster-form body is completely enveloped in a rich, saturated ultraviolet and cobalt palette, decorated with stylized depictions of indigenous wildlife and fluid, linear motifs that convey profound movement and spiritual depth. To ground the scene, the artist utilized a highly specific hand-sponge application, building a textured, mottled, fiery orange-and-yellow base layer, a one-of-a-kind masterwork, punctuated by fine-splatter details meticulously applied with a traditional toothbrush technique. It stands as an exceptional focal point for a rustic mantle, a Southwestern interior, or a striking layered vignette. See less
