This beautiful original watercolor by Walter Satterlee depicts a fisherman seated beside a young girl, carefully mending fishing nets along a working waterfront. The composition captures the quiet dignity of everyday life that made Satterlee's genre scenes so admired among American collectors.
What makes this piece especially meaningful is its journey.
The watercolor was discovered in damaged condition, having suffered a significant tear and separation along the lower right corner. Despite the damage, the quality of the work and the unmistakable hand of Satterlee were immediately evident. Rather than leaving it unrestored, the painting underwent professional conservation and stabilization to preserve the artwork for future generations.
The restoration successfully returned structural integrity to the paper while preserving the original character, brushwork, and period patina of the watercolor. Evidence of the repair remains visible upon close inspection and is honestly disclosed in the accompanying photographs.
Following conservation, the work was professionally matted and framed in an elegant museum-style dark wood frame that complements the warm tonal palette of the painting while providing proper protection and presentation.
Today the piece displays beautifully and has far greater visual impact than when originally acquired. The image itself remains exceptionally charming, with wonderful atmospheric washes, subtle coloration, and the loose confident handling characteristic of Satterlee's finest watercolor studies.
