Oil on canvas. French school of the mid-18th century. The work draws on other models of the French Rococo, such as that created by Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806), a painter known for his light, sensual, and refined painting, or that of Jean Antoine Watteau (1684–1721), famous for having invented the genre of 'galantiques', that is, idyllic, theatrical scenes set in lush parks, where the aristocracy entertain themselves with courtship, music, and conversation. Such is the scene depicted here: in a park, a lady, accompanied by her maid holding her parasol, listens to music played on the flute by a young man, while a pair of mischievous servants peer out from behind the tree. Lively, colorful, full of light vitality, the painting is pleasant and decorative. Still on its original canvas, it shows traces of slight previous restorations. In an early 1900s frame. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
