A charming turn-of-the-century reverse-painted glass depiction of the Washington Monument, housed in its original oval brass easel frame. Rendered with remarkable detail, the image captures the monument from across the Tidal Basin, with the surrounding landscape and bright red-roofed structures providing a picturesque glimpse of Washington, D.C. at the dawn of the 20th century.
One particularly fascinating feature is the visible color shift approximately one-third of the way up the monument. This reflects an actual architectural detail of the Washington Monument itself. Construction began in 1848 but was halted for more than two decades due to funding shortages and the Civil War. When work resumed in 1876, marble from a different quarry was used, creating the distinct change in color that remains visible today. The artist carefully captured this historic feature, lending the piece both visual interest and historical accuracy.
Reverse-painted glass souvenirs were highly collectible during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, serving as treasured keepsakes of travel to America's most important landmarks. The luminous sky, painterly landscape, and reflective surface give the scene an almost dreamlike quality.
The original brass frame features a beaded inner border and folding easel back, developing a warm aged patina that complements the historic character of the piece. Equally appealing to collectors of Americana, Washington memorabilia, antique travel souvenirs, and decorative objects.
A wonderful piece of early American history that celebrates one of the nation's most enduring monuments.
