The serpent and twig form is inspired by the Coalbrookdale style. Cast iron garden furniture emerged as a significant industry in Britain and America through the mid-19th century, allowing decorative forms previously reserved for carved stone or expensive joinery to be produced affordably for middle-class gardens. This bench places that aristocratic vocabulary directly into the garden in a form both functional and fully committed to its ornamental conceit. Wear consistent with age and use.
