This exceptional antique Japanese pottery vase dates from the late Meiji to early Taisho period (circa 1890–1920). It is a classic Sumida Gawa export piece, hand-sculpted and signed by the artist "Hiroshi" (宏).
The vase features a highly expressive raised figural scene of a child clinging to the shoulder of the vessel—an iconic motif in Sumida ware. Glazed in a rich oxblood red with white and buff accents, the piece combines bold modelling with dramatic colour contrast.
The buff-toned neck is unglazed, offering a lovely tactile contrast to the lustrous glaze. The child’s face and robes are detailed and full of personality, highlighting the expert craftsmanship. The base is clean and clearly signed with the character 宏 (Hiroshi).
Sumida pottery was made in the Tokyo area and exported in limited numbers to the West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each piece is unique, and this is an especially fine museum-quality example of the style.
Perfect for collectors of antique Japanese ceramics, export ware, and expressive figural pottery. A standout decorative accent for Asian-inspired interiors. This piece has an attribution mark,
