Crafted from low-fire … Read more This mid-century studio art pottery bottle vase was designed and handmade by ceramicist Polia Pillin circa 1950. Crafted from low-fire terracotta earthenware clay, the piece features a hand-painted underglaze slip decoration encircling the body. The design elements consist of stylized running horses rendered in a muted palette of olive green, brick red, and cream over an atmospheric background wash.

The equestrian motif depicts a continuous, integrated multi-horse pattern wrapping around the entirety of the form, utilizing fluid line work to accentuate the animal movements. At 8.5 inches in height, this vessel represents a larger, wheel-thrown spherical shape that is uncommon within the artist's broader body of work. While Pillin frequently produced small cabinet dishes or isolated single-figure compositions, this particular multi-horse continuous wrap composition represents a scarce configuration for her studio output.
