Here is an amazing original, hand colored, steel engraving of the delightfully shaggy Shetland pony or Shetland 'Poney', as it is titled on the print. The Sheltie shown is a small, hardy breed of pony in the wilds of the Shetland Islands of Scotland.
This is an illustration from The Naturalist’s Library: Mammalia Vol. XII – Horses (1841), edited by Sir William Jardine and illustrated by Charles Hamilton Smith. This antique print captures both the charm and grit of the Shetland breed: stoic, windblown, and incredibly saucy while plotting your downfall.
Known for its strength, dense coat, and ability to thrive in harsh climates. It has been present on the islands since at least the Bronze Age. Historically, Shetland ponies were used for farm work, carrying peat and seaweed, and later as pit ponies in coal mines in Britain and the United States. Today they are used for driving and children's riding ponies. A few still perform traditional work on the island.
A charming gift for horse lovers, natural history collectors, decor for a child's room or anyone who appreciates a bit of pony attitude in their life.. Light age toning is consistent with an existence of just 15 years shy of 200 years of age! Please look over the photos, they’re part of the description.
THIS PRINT:
An original steel engraving in Very Good condition.
Title: Shetland Poney
Unsigned
Unframed
11 1/2 inches long

CONDITION: Long ago someone had covered the matted etching in 'clear' plastic' to which they had affixed an information sticker. All had yellowed with age. It will be included.
Though affixed to a mat that shows minor spotting, the etching itself is in amazingly good condition. Nearly 200 years old, this piece is delightfully tidy with light age toning and carries the spritely energy of the beast himself! Please look over the photos, they’re part of the description.
PROVENANCE: Bought at the Lakeland, Florida Flea Market in the early1970s with no other provenance.
HISTORY:
