Multimedia, bio-sonic abstract sculpture created by the contemporary American interdisciplinary artist David W. McCullough.
This piece embodies McCullough's Quantum Art Aesthetic. His work merges physics, nature, and musical frequency. He uses layered, water-based acrylic polymers and mixed media. This builds heavy, dimensional textures resembling geological formations or ancient artifacts. He refers to himself as a "Quantum Sonic Colorist". He captures musical rhythms (particularly jazz) and the energy of environment spaces directly on the physical surface of his art.
Sculpture features a heavy, thick circular disc with a prominent square cutout centered in the middle.
Concentric, heavily striated grooves mimic rings of a tree, vinyl records, or orbital fields. The color layout transitions from an outer ring of muted slate-blue to inner rings of deep plum, earth-brown, and a bright magenta core.
Embedded across the rings are geometric accents (like a pink triangle, a white square tile, and a yellow circle) alongside squiggly fluid lines, numbers, and colorful points. These marks are visual representations of sonic impulses and frequency changes.
On back there are markings indicate a catalog number of "C#3-3736" and an artist inventory number of "AR#125-3037".It is signed by the artist "David W. McCullaugh" and dated "1975".
David W. McCullough is an interdisciplinary 'Quantum Artist' who works in five mediums. He was educated to art and technology, music, and poetry in Boston, Kansas City, and Dallas. His color filled bio - sonic creations have been exhibited and collected throughout the U.S.. since 1970 - 2020.
Born in Springfield, MA, David McCullough has made art and music all his life, earning his B.F.A. in painting and printmaking at the Kansas City Art Institute, and an M.F.A. in painting at the California Institute of the Arts. He gained a second M.F.A. in art and technology, at the University of Texas, Dallas, where since 2007 he has been on a Ph.D. track in Art and Technology.
McCullough has developed his unique and innovative art-making techniques to express his Taoist philosophy, broad musical influences, studies in quantum physics, and experiences in nature. Watercolors, drawings and poetry are made during his visits to sacred sites which will later be woven into what he calls “geomantic order” in his finished art.
As McCullough writes, “Utilizing mythology, music, poetry, and color symbolism, my art in all mediums speaks to the issue of a need for a new harmonic balance in our ecological-tech system. These visual tales are enigmatic picture-poems that will always reflect my deep love for the earth and her ever-changing colorful dancing spirit.”
The geometric shapes that appear frequently in McCullough’s work – the straight line, triangle and square – have their source in Islamic thought and architecture, representing the fundamentals of man-made order accompanying the naturally occurring forms of circle, arch and spiral.
