A beautiful example of early American art pottery, this marked Roseville jardiniere from the Rosecraft Colors line captivates with its pure ivory-white matte glaze and satisfying, sculptural form. Rosecraft Colors was among Roseville’s most refined early lines — stripped of surface ornament and relying entirely on form and glaze for its considerable appeal, very much in the spirit of the Arts & Crafts movement.
The squat, bulbous body swells from a defined foot ring to a wide, thick-rimmed mouth, flanked by two small loop handles set low on the shoulder. The exterior matte glaze is smooth and even, imparting a luminous, architectural quality that feels equally at home in a traditional, bohemian, or contemporary interior. An ideal vessel for a trailing plant, a bouquet (shown styled with fresh roses), dried botanicals, or simply displayed alone as a sculptural object.
Marked on the underside Roseville 550-4 — fully authenticated and easily identifiable to collectors and dealers alike.
Condition notes: The exterior glaze is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or restoration. The interior shows authentic age: fine craquelure (crazing) to the glaze and light staining/discoloration consistent with a piece that has been used over the decades, concentrated toward the center and lower interior wall. This is purely cosmetic and typical of vintage art pottery of this age; it does not affect structural integrity. The unglazed foot ring shows the characteristic warm bisque clay body with light age-appropriate toning.
A confident, collectible piece from one of Ohio’s most celebrated potteries, operating 1890–1954.
