This box is a vintage American folk art piece commonly known as “Tramp Art,” likely created in the late 19th or early 20th century. It measures 14 inches wide by 12.5 inches tall by 12 inches deep. It features a hinged lidded space at the top and a pull out drawer at the bottom. There is some minor damage and some of the missing pieces have been retained to be reattached by a qualified restorer.
It is constructed by layering and chip-carving reclaimed wood, frequently salvaged from cigar boxes or shipping crates.
These stacked, pyramidal boxes were often hand-whittled using simple tools like a pocket knife and used for storing jewelry or keepsakes.
