Earl Biss (Apsáalooke / Crow, 1947–1998), "War Canoes," 1980 — an original limited-edition serigraph with silver foil, number 44 from an edition of 100. Editioned in pencil at lower left (44/100) and signed and dated in pencil at lower right ("Biss 80").
The composition is classic Biss: a procession of figures in a carved canoe moving through a glacial mountain fjord, the snow-capped peaks built up in his sweeping marbled strokes, the water catching flashes of red, yellow, and green. The silver-foil ground gives the print a shifting luminosity that doesn't photograph — it reads differently as the light moves across the surface. Biss trained at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and the San Francisco Art Institute before a year of study in Europe (chairish) , and he remains among the most collected contemporary Native American artists.
Sheet measures 30 × 22 1/4 in. (76.2 × 56.5 cm), unframed. Colors are bright, the silver foil is intact, and the sheet presents clean with full margins.
