Earl Biss (Apsáalooke / Crow, 1947–1998), "War Canoes," 1980, an original limited-edition serigraph with silver foil, number 44 from an edition of 100. Editioned in pencil at lower left (44/100) and signed and dated in pencil at lower right ("Biss 80").
The composition is classic Biss: a procession of figures in a carved canoe moving through a glacial mountain fjord, the snow-capped peaks built up in his sweeping marbled strokes, the water catching flashes of red, yellow, and green. The silver-foil ground gives the print a shifting luminosity that doesn't photograph. It reads differently as the light moves across the surface. Biss trained at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and the San Francisco Art Institute before a year of study in Europe, and he remains among the most collected contemporary Native American artists.
Sheet measures 30 × 22 1/4 in. (76.2 × 56.5 cm), unframed. Colors are bright, the silver foil is intact, and the sheet presents clean with full margins.
