Large Mexican folk art sculpture depicting a mother and child rendered in black clay with a slip finish. Standing 19.5 inches in height, the figure is conceived as a lamp base and features a stylized female form holding a child at the centre of the composition.
The sculptural treatment reflects the influence of Oaxacan black pottery traditions associated with Herón Martínez Mendoza and related Barro Negro production. The piece is marked "35" to the interior and appears to have been manufactured as a lamp base, though no evidence of completed lamp assembly is present.
The elongated silhouette, braided hair, and hand-modelled details contribute to its strong sculptural presence within the tradition of twentieth-century Mexican folk art ceramics.
