Japanese wall pocket vase produced for the export market during the 1920s–1930s. Marked "Made in Japan," the piece is executed in black glazed ceramic and decorated with gilt bird and floral motifs characteristic of interwar Japanese export ware. The elongated wall pocket form corresponds with examples produced for the American market during the early twentieth century.
The black ground and gold decoration reflect the aesthetic associated with Japonisme-influenced ceramics, while the bird-and-foliage design relates to motifs commonly found on Japanese export pottery of the period. Dating to the Art Deco era, the vase represents a distinctive example of Japanese decorative ceramic production intended for Western interiors.
