Splendid Murano blown glass bowl vase with "a scavo" (excavated) workmanship, featuring an elongated cylindrical neck and a flared mouth. The glass body is embellished with a blue glass paste band that wraps around the neck, terminating on one side with a delicate handle; on the opposite side, a refined stylized cameo, also in slightly darker blue glass paste, depicting a lion's head, is hot-applied. To achieve the "excavated" effect that reproduces the surface of ancient glass artifacts found at archaeological sites, the glass was entirely treated with acids. Subsequently, the application of a metallic solution and subsequent kiln firing gave the piece a refined iridescent finish. The vase is unsigned, but in our opinion, it is fully attributable to the prestigious Seguso glassworks, which in the 1950s perfected and made famous this complex academic technique of scavo glassmaking.
This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
