Height: 24 cm; Width: 11.5 cm; Depth: 10 cm; Weight: 0.936 kg
Item :
A splendid cylindrical jug, characterized by an elongated neck with a straight mouth and a flared spout. The piece is made of glazed and vitrified ceramic, entirely hand-decorated: the composition features two lateral ears of corn and a stylized sparrow in the center, all executed in a refined cobalt blue against a light background. Beneath the base is a mulberry leaf (often thought to be a flower), the trademark of the unmistakable French manufacturer "Le Mûrier." The piece dates to the late 1950s or 1960s.
About the artist and/or manufacturer:
Atelier Le Mûrier was a renowned French artistic ceramics studio, founded in Vallauris in 1955 by master ceramist Gustave Reynaud (1915–1972) and his wife Micheline. The studio's history is part of the great cultural ferment of the postwar French Riviera and is distinguished by several key elements:
The Origins: Inspired by the great revival of Provençal ceramics and the presence of masters such as Pablo Picasso at the Madoura factory, Gustave Reynaud decided to establish his own workshop in the "Le Mûrier" (the mulberry) neighborhood, from which the studio takes its name.
The Style: The studio is renowned for its hand-decorated creations with graphic motifs enlivened by an almost naïve charm. Its favorite subjects are naturalistic and zoomorphic, such as plants, fish, birds, and stylized human figures.
Collaboration: Fundamental to the studio's visual identity was the artistic partnership with his brother-in-law Jean Derval, an already established ceramist, who actively collaborated with the Reynauds in researching glazes and developing the geometric and graphic designs of their decorations.
Materials: The works are distinguished by the expert use of high-end glazes (including the famous copper reds and cobalt blues) applied on ceramic backgrounds in mineral tones, white or finely streaked, giving the pieces unique textures and a remarkable luminosity.
Closing: The studio's artistic activity and production, signed directly by Gustave Reynaud, continued until 1972, the year of his death, and then ceased definitively in the 1980s. This piece has an attribution mark,
