A striking English Regency flame mahogany tilt-top center or breakfast table, circa 1810–1830, conceived with the bold architectural refinement and highly decorative veneer work associated with early 19th-century British cabinetmaking. The circular top is veneered in a dramatic radial starburst pattern, using richly figured mahogany laid in matched triangular sections that converge at the center like a sunburst medallion. This sophisticated use of bookmatched and radiating veneers was intended to display the cabinetmaker’s command of exotic figured timber, creating movement, depth, and luminous contrast across the polished surface. The table retains its traditional tilting action, with a substantial underside support structure and latch mechanism allowing the top to be raised vertically when not in use, a practical and elegant feature frequently found on Regency breakfast, library, and center tables.
The base is equally distinctive, formed with a central pedestal above three scrolling saber supports terminating in rounded volute feet. The shaped platform stretcher below follows a graceful concave outline and is enriched with fine line inlay, while the dark ebonized block feet provide a refined contrast to the warm reddish-brown mahogany. The combination of circular top, richly figured flame mahogany, starburst veneer arrangement, tilt-top construction, scrolling saber legs, line-inlaid platform base, and ebonized feet gives the table a commanding yet balanced presence. Suitable as a center table, breakfast table, library table, or formal display table, it is a handsome example of Regency design, where classical restraint, sculptural base forms, and highly expressive wood surfaces were brought together in a single decorative statement.
