The “HC & Co S” marks on one end indicate it was made in Sheffield England by the Hammond, Creake Co., in business from 1886-1935. This piece reflects the Edwardian style and was likely made between 1910 and 1920. Further marks show “EPNS,” indicating electroplated nickel silver, considered at the time to be the best base for electroplating. HC & Co. specialized in silver mounted oak pieces, but the grain in this wood suggests mahogany. This tray’s beautiful aged patina contrasting with the brighter silver makes it a rare and wonderful piece for serving drinks, appetizers, tea and coffee or just for bringing some warmth and history to your décor. Nevertheless, when you shine a light on it and look closely, you can see nicks and scratches on the wood and spots on the finish. Some tarnishing, dents, and scratches are apparent on the silver, and one of the silver rails is askew. Five missing thumb nails were replaced, and missing nuts added to four screws. less
